PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Alexia of Knoxville, Tennessee is a renowned International Performer, master teacher, and advocate of Middle Eastern Dance. Alexia’s love of dance stems from a background in jazz and modern dance, which she began as a teenager. She took her first class in bellydance at a local university over 25 years ago, and knew she had found her niche. Alexia studied bellydance for 5 years under Ibrahim (Bobby) Farrah before moving to New York City to study with Yousry Sharif and become a featured dancer in New York’s finest establishments: Ibis, Darvish, Cedars of Lebanon, and Beirut Restaurant. During her career, Alexia has performed professionally in Mexico City, Puerto Rico, London, Paris, Boston, Miami, California, and Orlando. While traveling, Alexia was honored to perform for Saudi Arabian royalty and international ambassadors.

Alexia believes that a teacher has a responsibility to learn and convey to her students as much about the culture of the dance and music as the movements themselves.  She has had the opportunity to travel to Cairo, Egypt; Istanbul, Turkey; Morocco, and Tunisia and explore the culture behind the art of Oriental Dance.  In addition, Alexia has had the opportunity to meet and dance with Egypt’s beloved dancer, Suhair Zaki.


CONTINUING EDUCATION

Alexia is committed to professionalism, integrity, and the advancement of the art of Middle Eastern Dance in the Knoxville community and always strives to continue learning new facets of the art.  She realizes the need to continually learn from master teachers worldwide.  Alexia participates in yearly week long workshops with Carnegie Hall performer and Bellydance Hall of Fame inductee Samara of New York, and yearly week long workshops with renowned Yousry Sharif.  In addition, Alexia participates in intensive workshops directed by Argentinean instructor Amir Thaleb, master teacher Virginia of Miami, and Egyptian dance phenomenon Tito.


PERFORMANCES, TROUPE, AND THEATRE SHOWS

Alexia currently performs and teaches in Knoxville, Tennessee, where students and fans are dazzled by her grace, personality, and stage presence. In addition to beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes, Alexia choreographs, compiles, produces, and directs an annual “Egyptian Nights” performance with her Middle Eastern Dance Ensemble.


Alexia has been featured locally on WBIR television’s “Style Show” and “Live at Five” broadcasts, in the pages of City View Magazine, The Metro Pulse, The Knoxville News Sentinel, and the University of Tennessee Daily Beacon. She performs annually in the city’s beloved Rossini Italian Street Fair, and has recently performed in an Arab-American Gala for city and state officials. In addition to local performances, Alexia performs by invitation in workshops across the country, in New York at special gala shows and by request at New York restaurants.


Alexia’s performances continue to garner rave reviews from national and international audiences. As always, Alexia is devoted to increasing community awareness and appreciation of the art form of Bellydance.
